South Sudan experiencing 57% inflation rate

Inflation rates in Africa's newest nation South Sudan are worryingly high, according to new statistics that will prompt cheap international calls from friends and family residing in the UK.
Annual inflation levels hit 57.1 per cent in August, according to the South Sudan National Bureau of Statistics.
This has been blamed on a steep rise in the cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages, the increasing cost of fish, sugar, cooking oil and some fresh meat products.
Prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco increased by 39.9 per cent between July and August 2011, while the cost of furnishing and household equipment rose by 81 per cent annually, the report also found.
United Nations agencies have warned that the country could face food shortages next year due to internal and border insecurity, erratic rainfall and a rising population.
