Wikipedia organises blackout in SOPA protest

Wikipedia is to conduct a worldwide blackout of its English language site for 24-hours in protest against the Stop Online Piracy (SOPA) and the Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011 (PROTECTIP), which is being considered by USA Congress.
The site claims that by introducing the SOPA legislation this will undermine free speech and will severely affect its ability to distribute internet content.
Other popular sites planning blackouts from 05:00 (GMT) on February 18th include Reddit, BoingBoing and video game news and review site Destructoid.com.
SOPA and PROTECIP are pieces of anti-piracy legislation, which if enacted could make it possible to block American internet users from accessing foreign sites accused of copyright infringement.
Many politicians have been quick to criticise these proposals, with the Obama administration arguing this weekend that it does not support online censorship.
