UK army launches 'major operation' in Afghanistan

A major operation has been launched by the UK army against Taliban positions in Afghanistan, it is claimed.
More than 350 British troops together with American allies have landed in Babaji in the south of the country as part of Operation Panther's Claw, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.
Referring to the region as a Taliban stronghold, the MoD said the manoeuvre represents one of the biggest air operations of modern times.
The allied forces announced they have discovered 1.3 tonnes of poppy seed - which may be linked to the opium trade - and a number of improvised explosive devices in the area.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the new commander of American and Nato forces in Afghanistan is issuing orders aimed at reducing the number of civilian casualties.
General Stanley McChrystal is believed to be instructing troops to exercise particular care in densely populated areas when it is safe to do so.
