Cheap international calls: Selling gold 'may be indicative of deeper debt problem'

People who are considering selling off their possessions to raise money are being urged to seek impartial advice first.
"If people are having to resort to selling treasured possessions in this way, then it can be indicative of a more serious underlying debt problem," said David Rodger, managing director of national charity the Debt Advice Foundation.
He advises people to first contact a debt advice charity, where experts will be able to go through all the options - which could avoid the need for the individual to sell their treasured possessions at below market rates.
Mr Rodger was speaking after an investigation from consumer group Which? found that people are being given shockingly bad value by companies that pay money for gold items sent through the post.
Which? sent three pieces of brand-new jewellery to four gold buyers that advertise on TV and found that CashMyGold offered the lowest quotes on all three items – although the jewellery had actually been purchased for £729, the firm offered a total of £38.57.
