International parents day focuses on alienation problem

Efforts are being made this week to raise awareness of a problem in families which is known as parental alienation.
International Parental Alienation Awareness Day takes place on April 25th and highlights the issue of one parent becoming alienated from their child after separation or divorce.
A group known as Families Need Fathers states the situation usually occurs when the resident parent effectively turns the child against the non-resident parent.
Families Need Fathers says it will be using the day to make an international call to courts and welfare services "to recognise parental alienation as a real and serious threat to children's welfare, be aware of its symptoms and consequences and to take quick and effective steps when cases of parental alienation are identified".
A recent survey carried out by GfK NOP on behalf of the Charities Aid Foundation suggested families may actually be brought closer together as a result of the recession.
