Scottish politician calls for protection of women's rights in Afghanistan

A Scottish politician has urged the UK government to do what it can to protect the human rights of women in Afghanistan.
Christina McKelvie of the Scottish National Party (SNP) lodged a motion before the Scottish parliament which condemns a shia family law bill currently before the Afghan parliament which would legalise rape within marriage.
She described the proposed law as an "attack on the fundamental rights of Afghan women".
Ms McKelvie warned: "Progress has been made in Afghanistan but I fear recent developments represent a return to the darkest days of the Taliban."
Nato leaders have this week pledged to send an additional 5,000 troops to Afghanistan.
The UK is to send a further 900 troops, with nine European countries agreeing to send more fighting forces as part of the deal struck at the Nato summit.
