New mobile phone spam clampdown launched in Australia

Mobile phone owners using their handsets to make cheap international calls are set to benefit from a new government-led measure aimed at clamping down on the problem of spam.
Up until now, anyone receiving a spam message to their handset was only able to report it to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) via an online form, meaning many cases were ultimately un-reported.
However, the government-run agency has now launched its latest tool in the fight against the widespread problem, with Spam SMS enabling mobile phone owners to forward any offending messages on to a special number where it will be dealt with by officials.
Commenting on the initiative, ACMA chairman Chris Chapman explained that spam messages needn't be a major irritant for people, with the tools in place to deal with the issue.
"We can actually do a lot to help in this space, but we have to know about it," he said.
This comes as CBS in Chicago has reported a rise in text messaging scams, with mobile phone users receiving messages purporting to be from their banks requiring them to send back their personal data, thereby placing them at risk of fraud.
