Australian retail sales weaken in December, ABS says

Those wishing to make cheap calls to Australia should be aware retail sales took a discouraging dip in December.
Despite it being the month of festive cheer and typically increased spending, retail sales declined 0.1 per cent last month, figures released today (February 6th) by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed.
Accoding to a report published in the Sydney Moring Herald, this is the worst retail sales result the country has witnessed in 27 years, with shoppers opting to axe spending over paying down debt.
Chief economist at the Bank of Melbourne Besa Deda said: “The lethal mix of consumer caution, rise of online spending, worsening global economic conditions and weather woes led to a slump in retailing not witnessed since the 1980s”, the news provider quoted.
The decline in retail figures was not anticipated by forecasters, who believed the figure would rise 0.2 per cent, however, turnover totalled less than $21 million.
Meanwhile, Julia Gillard’s administration ministers have been standing by her since rumours began circulating that former prime minister Kevin Rudd intends to challenge her at the next election.
