Cheap international calls: Racism 'still a problem' in schools

Bullying and racism are still problems in schools today, according to an expert.
"It is certainly difference that is picked on," said Claude Knights, director of Kidscape.
Ms Knights said she finds it sad that despite all the efforts made over the years in publicising the issues around racism and bullying, these things are still going on among children in schools.
She continued: "We must not be complacent and think that we are throwing so much resources at this that we have got it right. We obviously haven't, have we?"
Meanwhile, a recent report from the Manifesto Club has found that toddlers in nurseries and primary schoolchildren are being punished for making racist insults even when they do not understand the terms they are using.
Examples of such cases reported to the education authorities included a child calling two other children "chocolate bars", and Bangladeshi children referring to each other as "kala bander", meaning black monkey.
