Sale of mobiles in India to hit 138.6 million

The mobile phone industry in India is going great guns with recent market research predicting that sales are likely to peak this year.
An estimated 138.6 million cellular phone handsets will be sold in India, according to forecasts made by Gartner.
The reason behind this trend is being pinned on the rising competition in the market, which is driving down costs and making mobile phones more easily accessible to a growing number of people, claimed the market analyst.
Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner, said: "Price remains the main criteria when buying any consumer electronic device in India, including a mobile device.
"Carrier strategies, lower tariffs and/or third-generation (3G) data plans will continue to shape the mobile device market in India."
Recently, telecoms provider Vodafone launched a solar-powered handset that was aimed at attracting customers in rural India.
