UK tourism 'needs dedicated government department'

A UK tourism chief has called for the creation of a new government department to meet the specific needs of the tourism sector.
"I dream that one day the fifth largest industry in the UK will have its own government department," stated Phillip Green, chairman of UKinbound, speaking at the UKinbound convention.
He believes that, unlike the current Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the new department would need to have the word "tourism" in its title.
And a key component of the new department's success would be "continuity", he added, as regularly appointing new ministers to head up departments is not conducive to developing a coherent tourism strategy.
Overseas visitors to the UK are able to keep in touch with loved ones back home by making cheap international calls through Planet Talk Instant.
New figures from the Office for National Statistics show that there was no increase in the number of visits to and from the UK in the three months from September to November 2009.
