Will an eco-tax be levied on Ganesh Chathurti?

The Indian festival of Ganesh Chathurti could also become the occasion for a new form of taxation besides the celebrations of the resident elephant-headed deity.
Widely celebrated in the western parts of India, the festival sees devotees worshipping the Hindu God Ganesh who is later immersed in adjacent rivers or sea-shore to mark the end of the week-long festivities.
Indians living in the UK will no doubt make cheap international calls to wish family and friends back at home.
However, this year things could be a little different as the Maharashtra pollution board is urging the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to levy a special tax on groups that will lead the emersion rites.
The new eco-friendly tax will be aimed at raising funds to ensure the effective and timely removal of debris and waste so as to minimise the risks of water pollution.
