The world is becoming an increasingly corrupt place, according to the findings of a global survey.
A poll carried out by Transparency International found that over 50 per cent of people in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Iraq had paid a bribe in the past year.
In sub-Saharan Africa, 67 per cent of bribes were paid to escape difficulty with the authorities and in Asia-Pacific most were used to speed things up while in the EU and North America, the majority of people said they could not remember.
Fifty six per cent of people thought that their country had become more corrupt and political parties were thought to be the worst offenders.
In addition, religious bodies have seen a dramatic increase in the number of people who regard them as corrupt, with 2004's 28 per cent rising to 53 per cent in 2010.
Another poll, carried out by GlobeScan for the BBC, found that corruption is the most talked about concern, with many no doubt picking up the phone and making cheap international calls to discuss their worries.
