Chinua Achebe rejects Nigerian literary award

Cheap calls to Nigeria could be prevalent as the country's literary icon Chinua Achebe has rejected a prestigious award on political grounds.
Achebe was due to receive the national title of Commander of the Federal Republic in 2004, however, he wrote to the head of state at the time Olusegun Obasanjo to explain that he was "appalled" by the "cliques" who had turned his native Nigeria into a "bankrupt and lawless" society.
He has since refused to receive the award again this week as the problems he first raised seven years ago "have not been addressed let alone solved", therefore he claims that "it is inappropriate to offer it again to me. I must regretfully decline the offer again".
Achebe was due to receive the award from president Goodluck Jonathan later this week for his contribution to Nigerian and African literature.
The author is most famous for his book Things Fall Apart, one of the most widely read pieces in the country.
