South Africa looks to punish incorrect weather forecasters
Friday, Jan 13, 2012 Filed Under :Planet Talk Instant News
A new law in South Africa could prompt cheap international calls after it outlined punishments for independent forecasters who predict the weather incorrectly. The new legislation threatens that if severe weather warnings are issued without official permission and are proved not to be right independent forecasters could be imprisoned for up to ten years or fined up to £800,000. These proposed amendments to South Africa's Weather Service Bill have been designed to prevent economic damage and panic, which the government can be caused by false predictions of drought, flash floods or severe winds. In order to forecast such conditions, written permission from the country's official national weather service would need to be obtained. The amendment announced today has received significant criticism from the opposition party the Democratic Alliance, who have branded the law change as "draconian". © Copyright Use Planet Talk to call South Africa with the cheapest rates to landlines and mobile
