Nigeria fuel price slashed in face of growing unrest
Monday, Jan 16, 2012 Filed Under :Planet Talk Instant News
Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan has bowed to pressure from unions and announced a reduction in fuel costs, effective immediately. Strikes have been widespread across the country over the last few weeks, with many of the country's unions appalled at a decision to scrap fuel subsidies earlier this month. Petrol prices leapt from 65 naira (£0.26) per litre to 140 naira following the removal of subsidies on January 1st. In a televised national address, Mr Jonathan said: "Given the hardships being suffered by Nigerians, and after due consideration and consultations with state governors and the leadership of the National Assembly, government has approved the reduction of the pump price of petrol to 97 naira per litre." Nigeria has been wracked with unrest over the last month, with violence perpetrated by both Muslims and Christians against each other as religious tensions have come to a head just as economic pressures come to bear. © Copyright Use Planet Talk to call Nigeria with the cheapest rates to landlines and mobiles
