Cheap calls: Further education 'not a sensible option', students warned
Friday, Oct 09, 2009 Filed Under :Planet Talk Instant News
University students are being told that staying on to do further study after their degree course may not be a sensible option.
Undertaking further studies instead of looking for a job "can be more of a diversion", said Peter Panayotou, senior consultant at careers consultancy The Write Stuff.
"It doesn't necessarily add anything or make you more employable," the expert warned.
Mr Panayotou was speaking after academics from the Institute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick carried out a survey into career planning among 49,555 students.
The report, published by the Higher Education Careers Services Unit, revealed that almost two-thirds (63 per cent) of students did not use the career service provided by their university at all.
Some 42 per cent of students preferred to gain an insight into their chosen career path through friends and family.
