Cheap international calls can play an important role in bringing down carbon emissions around the world, it is believed.
Replacing overseas business travel with international calling systems such as teleconferencing can also save time and money, said Cait Weston, policy and communications officer at the Aviation Environment Federation (AEF).
"We can't just keep expanding our airports in the hope that some future, mythical technology will save the day," she continued.
Now is the time, Ms Weston explained, to start taking real action to address the urgent problem of rising carbon emissions.
The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) recently advised the UK government that global aviation emissions should be capped as part of a wider global agreement to tackle climate change.
Developed countries will need to take a lead by making significant reductions in aviation emissions, according to the CCC.
