Families that take part in shared activities can develop stronger bonds as a result, an expert has said.
Sitting around a dining table to eat a meal together is one way in which families can engage with each other in a positive manner, according to Alison Morris, editor of MyDaughter.co.uk.
"To keep family bonds strong, the more common or joint activities there are, the better," she explained.
"Eating is one of the great pleasures in our life, so it should be a pleasurable activity."
Families should do their best to plan such activities, Ms Morris added, because in the modern world many people have very busy lives.
For those families who are unfortunate enough to be living in different countries, a service offering cheap international calls such as Planet Talk can be an invaluable means of keeping in touch on a day-to-day basis.
According to recent research from Spam, family meal times are becoming a thing of the past due to working mums and busy kids, with 27 per cent of parents apparently having their meal after the children have gone to bed.
