Cheap international calls: Philippines research finds 'germ-free' kids may end up less healthy

The modern obsession with ultra-cleanliness and antibacterial soaps may be detrimental to the long-term health of the population, it is claimed.
Scientists in the USA have analysed research conducted in the Philippines and concluded that babies' exposure to germs may be beneficial for their immune systems later in life.
Researchers in the Philippines assessed children born in the 1980s to 3,327 mothers and kept tabs on them until they reached their 20s, with the hygiene of their households taken into account.
In their study published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society, the scientists at Chicago's Northwestern University found that those children exposed to fewer germs tended as adults to have higher levels of a protein in their bloodstream that is associated with an increased risk of inflammation and heart disease.
Meanwhile, a parenting expert has reminded parents that they don't have to spend lots of money this Christmas.
Amy Schofield, editor of MyChild.co.uk, said: "The best thing to do to avoid getting swept along on the overspending tide of Christmas commercialism is to get back to basics and remember that it isn't all about the money."
