Philosopher and writer Alain de Botton has described travel as a "psychological adventure".
However, Mr de Botton believes that people often have "confused" reasoning for international travel and perhaps focus too much on trying to tick off the major sites.
He uses the example of a trip to Rome and says that an individual might actually find a trip to the supermarket to be the most interesting aspect of the holiday, as opposed to a more grand tourist spot.
He explains: "Often it's the little domestic details, the context with people - it's all of those things that get edited out of travel stories that are things that really make our journeys."

Some 16 per cent of people say they are more likely to go on holiday in the next year than they were six months ago.
But Brits are being more cautious with their holiday spending - average holiday spend per person per week dropped from £312 in the last quarter to £295 this quarter.
