Philippines basketball league attracts 'enthusiastic following'

A new basketball league has captured the public's imagination in the Philippines, it is reported.
By setting a height limit of 1.83 metres, the Below Six-Feet Basketball League (B6BL) aims to level the playing field for shorter players, according to the Independent.
B6BL founder Nilo Fernandez told the newspaper that the average height of Filipinos is approximately 1.63 metres, so it provides talented yet shorter players with the chance to shine.
A local cable television basketball channel is set to broadcast B6BL matches in April, which Mr Fernandez hopes will help to raise the profile of the competition.
"They could create an international league. Countries like Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia - they would like it too because they don't have seven-footers," he said.
In other basketball news from the Philippines, Manila Standard Today has reported that a major utility company may soon be back involved with the sport.
The news provider stated that Manila Electric Company is interested in joining the Philippine Basketball Association, which is Asia's first professional cage league.
