Cheap calls: UK 'successfully' attracts international investment

Prior to the recession, the UK was successfully attracting plenty of inward investment from businesses based in other countries, an expert has said.
"We have got a track record of attracting inward investment and capital into this country," said Tony Dolphin, senior economist at the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR).
The UK benefits from some "natural advantages" such as language but government policy has also played a part in attracting international investors, he commented.
Mr Dolphin continued: "There is the Kraft-Cadbury sort of story of 'why do our industries always get taken over and no-one else's', and that's the downside of it perhaps."
But he added that there is a significant upside of companies coming to the UK to set up production plants and other facilities.
According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics, the UK's gross domestic product increased by 0.1 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2009, compared to a decrease of 0.2 per cent in the third quarter.
