Cheap international calls: University funding cuts greeted with concern

Cuts in government funding for universities could result in serious repercussions, an expert has warned.
"Any cut in funding is bound to influence the ability of universities to offer a continuing high level of education," said Johnny Rich, editor of Push.co.uk.
He believes that ongoing funding is needed in order to protect and expand the universities sector.
Although many people seem to think that we already have enough graduates, Mr Rich continued, in fact the country needs more because universities play a major role in developing innovation and attracting investment to the country.
He added that universities will "very probably" increase tuition fees in order to plug the shortfall.
That may be a worrying prospect for overseas students, who would need to make international calls back home to arrange additional funding if fees do go up.
Mr Rich was speaking after the UK government's business secretary Peter Mandelson wrote a letter to the Higher Education Funding Council for England in which he outlines plans to reduce funding to universities by some £398 million in 2010-11.
