Volcano flights crisis 'cost airlines $1.7bn'

The impact of the Icelandic volcano dust crisis on the international aviation industry has amounted to $1.7 billion (£1.1 billion), it is claimed.
That's the estimate from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) of revenues lost due to the grounding of flights in the six days following the initial eruption.
"At the worst, the crisis impacted 29 per cent of global aviation and affected 1.2 million passengers a day," said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's director general and chief executive officer. "The scale of the crisis eclipsed 9/11 when US airspace was closed for three days," he claimed.
Mr Bisignani added that it has been a devastating blow for an industry that was already expected to lose significant amounts of money in 2010.
Meanwhile, the dust cloud has raised concerns for telecommunications services, with techeye.net reporting that microwave and satellite links could go down if the dust cloud became dense enough.
