Saudi Arabia urged to scrap amputation sentences

Saudi Arabia looks likely to become the subject of cheap international calls this week after it was urged to scrap amputation sentences.
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch (HRW) have argued that this method of punishment is "torture" and is hoping that six men convicted of robbery are not subjected to such sentences.
"Cutting off someone's hands and feet is torture, plain and simple," said Christoph Wilcke, HRW senior Middle East researcher.
Amnesty International has also issued a plea to King Abdullah, which outlines why he should not ratify the sentences to chop off the right hands and the left feet of the six Saudis.
Both human rights groups have claimed that the men were forced into confessing and called the punishment for highway robbery as "strikingly cruel".
