'More competition' in Sri Lankan mobile market

Competition in the Sri Lankan mobile telecommunications market could lead to cheaper tariffs for international calls to Sri Lanka.
The country previously had four mobile operators, according to a second-quarter report from Business Monitor International.
However, the entry of a fifth company into the market has led to operators fighting to retain their market share.
International calls to Sri Lanka may be expected to become cheaper as a result, although the report notes that at least one company in the region is focusing on offering a domestic service with good value, rather than cheaper tariffs.
"At the end of 2008, there were around 11.087 million mobile subscribers in the market, a penetration rate of 54 per cent and annual growth of 39 per cent," the report observes.
"This rate of increase is slower than in previous years at 48 per cent in 2007 and 61 per cent in 2006."
In the quarterly-published report, Business Monitor International assesses both domestic and international operators in the Sri Lankan telecommunications market, giving a five-year forecast of how it expects conditions to change.
