Cheap calls: International tourism sector 'in recovery'

International tourism is said to be on the up once again after recent declines linked to the global financial crisis.
Growth returned to international tourism in the last quarter of 2009, contributing to better-than-expected results for the year, according to the latest data from the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
International tourist arrivals for business, leisure and other purposes are estimated to have declined worldwide by four per cent in 2009 to 880 million, representing a slight improvement on previous estimates.
UNWTO secretary-general Taleb Rifai said: "The global economic crisis aggravated by the uncertainty around the A(H1N1) pandemic turned 2009 into one of the toughest years for the tourism sector."
But he added that the figures from recent months suggest the recovery is not only underway, but has emerged "at a stronger pace than initially expected".
The UNWTO is a specialised agency of the United ?Nations and is the leading international organisation in the field of tourism, with a membership that includes 161 countries and territories.
