International assistance is needed in Sudan in order to prevent new violent conflict in the country, aid groups have warned.
Oxfam and other agencies stated that the peace deal agreed in 2005 is now extremely fragile, with the south of the country vulnerable to suffering a potential humanitarian disaster.
Urgent action is needed from the international community to contain the situation as the country moves closer to elections and a referendum on independence for the south within the next year, the groups said.
Ongoing disputes over the country's oil resources were also cited as factors that could potentially stretch the peace agreement to breaking point.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has released new data which shows that at least 28 civilian UN workers were killed in violent acts in 2009.
Seven peacekeepers were also killed, six of whom lost their lives while serving with the joint UN and African Union force in Darfur.
