Mass migration following natural disasters 'needs to be better anticipated'

Cheap international calls pledging support whenever there is a natural disaster such as a drought are not uncommon, but governments have been urged to be better prepared for catastrophes.
Mass migrations resulting from rising global temperatures need to be prepared for, according to researchers at the University of Florida.
Two scientists, who form part of the group of 12 experts who gathered for the Rockefeller Foundation's review of population resettlement last year, have underlined the need for advanced preparations to avoid significant negative ramifications.
Florida University anthropologist Anthony Oliver-Smith said: "The effects of climate change are likely to be experienced by as many people as disasters.
"More people than ever may be moving in response to intense storms, increased flooding and drought that makes living untenable in their current location."
Higher temperatures are already threatening food production in parts of the world.
Research carried out at the University of California San Diego last year indicated rice growing areas in Asia are finding production has been closed by changing temperatures.
