Researchers hopeful mobile phones can become a 'fat fighting tool'

A new mobile phone system being tested by scientists in the USA could help device students to improve their diet.
Researchers from Georgia Tech presented their test findings to delegates at the Conference of Computer Supported Work earlier this month, which show how mobile phones can be effectively utilised as a means of encouraging fruit and vegetable consumption.
The EatWell system has been designed to allow communities to share their healthy eating success stories, focused around how they have managed to avoid foods high in sugar and fat, such as chocolate cake.
Lead researcher and PhD candidate at Georgia Institute of Technology College of Computing Andrea Grimes said: "People talk about being engaged with the content in EatWell because they actually hear the emotion in people's stories.
"They could hear the pride and excitement people felt when they tried a new smoothie recipe, or when this guy talks about trying out the veggie burger at Burger King."
Mobile phones are increasingly being used for much more than making cheap international calls by researchers.
In November, researchers at the Tampere University of Technology and the University of Helsinki developed a new mobile phone screening technology that was capable of detecting whether someone is suffering from a sleep disorder.
