Afghan free healthcare 'must be implemented correctly'

Efforts to remove fees from Afghanistan's healthcare system have no doubt prompted cheap international calls to discuss the move, yet it is important it is done on the basis of the appropriate advice.
This is the conclusion of a new study of free healthcare measures introduced across the world, including in Afghanistan, Mali, Nepal and Rwanda.
Researchers gathered evidence based on assessments of the effects of such a change in a number of countries and published their findings in the journal Health Policy & Planning.
Common problems included decisions taken in a hasty manner without sufficient preparation, which can lead to difficulties coping with demand.
However, when well implemented the research showed healthcare outcomes to be dramatically improved.
Bruno Meessen, researcher at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, said: "Providing free healthcare is more complex than it is usually thought.
"Leadership developed by African leaders in favour of vulnerable populations such as young children and pregnant women has to be praised."
