Data shows improved Afghan maternal mortality rates

Maternal mortality rates in Afghanistan are more favourable than previously thought, according to the latest figures from the country's Ministry of Public Health.
Although infant mortality rates among the under-fives remains a significant concern, according to the Afghanistan Mortality Rate Survey, improving standards of care have seen mothers chances of survival improve.
Previous data had suggested as many as one in every 11 women suffered pregnancy related mortality, but the new figures show the rate is actually one in every 50.
Save the Children's Afghanistan Country Director David Skinner explained that there have been advances in care for children too.
"Since 2003, around 20,000 community health workers and 2,500 midwives have been trained," he said. "As a result of this, and other community-level activities, fewer children are dying from prevenable causes like diarrhoea or pneumonia."
However, he added that the rates of child mortality are still unacceptable, making calls for Afghanistan to build on existing efforts which have brought about positive results.
