Hamid Karzai drops prominent human rights commission members
Wednesday, Dec 28, 2011 Filed Under :Planet Talk Account News
Afghanistan's president Hamid Karzai has dropped prominent members of the national human rights commission, including the outspoken Ahmad Nadery. Nadery, along with two other members Fahim Hakim and Maulawi Guhlam Muhammad Gharib, will be replaced on the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission. The institution has been praised for its outspoken commitment to the human rights cause following the ousting of the Taliban from power, with Nadery among the most vocal critics of abuse of power. President's office spokesperson Aimal Faizi told Reuters the removal of the three men was not prompted by work on a report detailing atrocities committed over the past 30 years. "The president is authorized by law to extend or not extend their mission if he wants to," Mr Faizi explained. "We just want fresh people." The three departures will not be considered sackings officially, with the mandates for each member having expired on December 16th. © Copyright Use Planet Talk to call Afghanistan with the cheapest rates to landlines and mobiles
