Australia rejects Japanese call to protect whalers

Heated phone calls to Australia may be prevalent this week after government officials rejected a call from Japan to protect the Asian country's whaling fleet.
Japan has asked for greater levels of security for its fleet in Antarctic waters, which in recent years has become the site of violent clashes with animal rights activists.
This news comes after a Japanese fleet set off this week on the nation's annual whale hunt, which has prompted plans to harass the whalers from the militant Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
Tony Burke, environment minister for Australia, explained that the country had no plans to use navy or customs assistance to monitor the events out at sea.
This is despite Japanese authorities calling for action at a recent International Whaling Commission meeting.
Burke told ABC News: "What Japan was asking us was to provide a higher level of protection for their vessels simply because they are involved in whaling.
"There is no way that we could countenance something like that."
