Media 'must play its part' in promoting Ghana gender equality

The media has been urged to play its part in promoting gender equality across the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) sub-region.
Gender equality is linked "inextricably" to economic development, peace and security, claimed Ghana's deputy minister for women and children's affairs.
In her opening address at the UN Forum on Women in Accra, Ms Gariba urged members of the media to help spread the doctrine of gender equality.
The forum comes ahead of an expert group meeting, scheduled for later this month.
The "Enabling rural women's economic empowerment: institutions, opportunities and participation" has been set up and sponsored by UN Women, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme. It will consider the role of women in the context of hunger eradication, poverty and existing challenges.
Participants at the event, which will take place between September 20th and 23rd, will include Georgetown University, US's Patricia Biermayr-Jenzano, Ms Mildred Crawford of the Jamaica Network of Rural Women Producers, and Ms Grace Bediako of the Ghana Statistical Service.
