India looking to prosecute web giants over obscene content

Cheap calls to India could be set to rise after the government authorised the prosecution of 21 leading internet firms, AFP reports.
The web giants, such as Google, Facebook and Yahoo!, are all being pursued over obscene content posted online, which could see company directors being called to a trial court.
Government sources claim that serious charges such as fomenting religious hatred and spreading social discord would be followed up.
Local journalist Vinay Rai first filed the criminal case in a lower court, after claiming that the sites should be held responsible for offensive and obscene material posted by users.
His lawyer, Sashi Prakash Tripathi, told AFP: "We had applied for the government's sanction and the ministry of communication and IT has filed it directly in the metropolitan magistrate's court."
The internet companies which have been targeted are believed to have already filed a petition in the Delhi High Court.
