Hepatitis C breakthrough could reduce treatment times

Scientists believe they have made a breakthrough in the treatment of hepatitis C, which could prove beneficial for sufferers in China, Pakistan and India, where chronic infection rates are high.
Researchers at the University of Cincinnati gave participants a combination medication over a 24-week course, half the time over which the drug treatment is usually administered.
They concluded that the extended treatment usually offered was unnecessary and a shift to a shorter regime would reduce side effects associated with longer-term use.
The findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, show that 92 per cent of participants who received the 24-week treatment had an extended rapid virologic response, which is considered an important milestone during treatment of the chronic condition.
Principal investigator Kenneth Sherman explained: "The high viral cure rates showed that there was no benefit to extending the therapy to 48 weeks for the majority of people in this trial.
"Importantly, patients in this trial had a high likelihood of achieving a cure with 24 weeks of total therapy if they had a rapid response to these regimens by week four. Knowing this may provide important motivation for people to continue therapy."
The findings will no doubt prompt cheap international calls between specialists in Hepatitis C treatment across the world, to discuss the findings.
