Philippine authorities seize illegal turtle shells

Philippine authorities may be the subject of cheap international calls after they seized a large shipment of anteater and turtle parts.
The momentous seizure of illegal endangered animal products has signalled that the trade in these goods is booming.
A total of 26.5 kg of Philippine pangolin, or anteater, was being smuggled as goat meat, while more than 90 kg of hawksbill and green turtle shells were also seized from the Puerto Princesa city airport on January 4th.
Turtle scutes, the plates that cover the shells, are commonly used in the country to decorate guitars and other products, while pangolin is a key ingredient in many traditional medicines and food dishes.
Endangered animals are protected by laws in many Asian nations, with a trade ban in effect since 2002; however the black market continues to thrive due to corruption.
