Saudi Arabian environmental restoration wins award

The restoration of an area of land in Saudi Arabia that was once filled with toxic landfill has netted an architectural firm an international award.
Canadian company Moriyama & Teshima picked up the Aga Khan Award for Architecture for its work in the Wadi Hanifah valley.
The award recognises ecological projects that have proved a practical success. In this case, around 400,000 cubic metres of waste water is cleaned and recycled back into the nearby Riyadh capital city every day.
Moriyama's Drew Wensley explained: "We knew this would be a case study for the world and that if it was successful on this scale, it could easily be applied to smaller scale interventions around the world.
"The success of the Wadi proves that there are solutions available to tackle environmental challenges, even where extreme degradation exists."
The restoration work was completed in collaboration with engineering firm Buro Happold and will undoubtedly provide much topic of conversation during cheap international calls to family and friends from Saudi Arabia.
