Wireless email subscribers could top 1bn by 2014

Accessing email through a mobile phone or another portable device could soon become the norm for many telecoms subscribers.
New forecasts by Gartner indicate that the number of wireless email users globally will reach one billion by 2014, which could have major implications for the choice of cheap international call providers.
Business wireless email accounts alone are estimated at more than 80 million already, data from the analysis firm shows, with productivity gains offered by being able to access email on the move expected to drive uptake.
Commenting on the predictions, Gartner research vice-president Monica Basso explained: "In 2010, enterprise wireless e-mail is still a priority for organisations, whose mobile workforces are up to 40 per cent of the total employee base.
"Most mid-size and large organizations in North America and Europe have deployed enterprise wireless e-mail already, but on average, for less than five per cent of the workforce."
Earlier this month, Gartner indicated that the number of mobile payment users worldwide will exceed 100 million by the end of 2010, driven by growth in Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
