Bangladesh group praises bride who refuses dowry

Cheap calls to Bangladesh could be numerous this week after a bride disowned her husband within minutes of their wedding because he demanded a dowry payment.
Top human rights group Ask praised Farzana Yasmin for taking a "principled and brave stand against the gross injustice of dowry payments", the BBC reports.
They also claimed that dowries "were the cancer of society".
The number of enforced dowries in rural areas is still high, however they giving or receiving dowries is a criminal offence according to laws passed by the Bangladeshi government.
Ms Yasmin's decision to divorce her husband so soon after the wedding has sent shockwaves throughout the country and the event is fast becoming a popular topic of debate.
She is now filing for divorce and has fled her home village to take refuge with friends and family in Dhaka.
