Polish Nobel prize-winning poet dies

It may be the right time to call Poland and commiserate with loved ones after it was revealed one of the country’s most revered figures passed away at the ripe age of 88, it was announced on Wednesday (February 1st).
Nobel literature prize-winning poet Wislawa Szymborska died “peacefully” in her sleep after a long-standing battle with lung cancer, Michal Rusinek, the poet’s assistant, told the PAP news agency.
The legendary champion of literature passed away at her home in Krakow, with president Bronislaw Komorowski commemorating her life and describing her as the nation’s “guardian spirit”.
During her career, Szymborska published more than 20 books, including a number of volumes of poetry, wither name her held dear to Polish citizens’ hearts.
The multi-talented poet began working as an artist during the Nazi occupation of Poland in the second World War, when she provided the illustrations to an English-language textbook.
She published 250 poems over the course of her lifetime and undertook Polish language at the University of Jagiellonian after the war, but could not complete her studies due to money problems.
Her funeral is to be held in Krakow on February 9th, with President Komorowski expected to attend.
