South Africans called to reduce energy output

South Africans have been called on to reduce their energy usage by ten per cent in an effort to combat the nation’s declining supply by the country’s biggest provider in a statement issued today (January 30th).
Eskom chief executive Brian Dames suggested the next two years will be crucial to improving South Africa’s energy supply, with the peak of the deficit set to kick in this year.
The supplier has cut the backlog from 36 units in May 2011 to 25 units, however, it warned this was 2 per cent below the targeted maintenance ratio of ten per cent.
Mr Dames said: “We have made it a priority to address the maintenance challenge, so that we can keep the lights on not only now, but also in the longer term, and we need to find the space to do that.”
The chief executive urged Eskom customers to help the company save electricity as it works closely with the government to develop solutions to reduce the energy gap.
Since 2008, the company said that coal stockpiles have been replenished and are now at “healthy levels”.
